Supporting Children's Health with Traditional Chinese Medicine

Childrens Health and Traditional Chinese Medicine

Children often catch colds, flu, or other contagious illnesses easily. Many also suffer from respiratory conditions such as asthma, bronchitis, or allergies.

These conditions can often be alleviated by strengthening the Qi of the Lungs, Kidneys, and Spleen while reducing Liver Qi stagnation.

Paediatric Tui Na: A Gentle and Effective Treatment

Many children are understandably afraid of needles, but acupuncture is usually unnecessary. Instead, Paediatric Tui Na, a specialized form of acupressure massage, is a preferred treatment.

Tui Na is based on the same principles as acupuncture and herbal medicine but is a safe, comfortable, and effective therapy for children from infancy up to around 8 or 9 years old.

The Four Key Organs in Children's Health

1. The Spleen

A child's energy levels, digestion, and concentration are closely linked to Spleen Qi. The Spleen is responsible for producing Qi, the body's vital energy.

Signs of Spleen Qi Deficiency:

  • Digestive issues and poor appetite
  • Craving sugar and junk food
  • Weakened immune system and frequent illness
  • Low concentration and poor attentiveness

2. The Liver

The Liver is the body's primary detoxifier and regulates emotions. When Liver function is impaired, a child may experience emotional imbalances and physical symptoms.

Signs of Liver Qi Stagnation or Liver Heat:

  • Mood swings, irritability and anger
  • Skin problems and rashes
  • Stress-related symptoms
  • Sensitivity to environmental toxins

3. The Kidney

The Kidneys are essential for a child's hormonal balance, development, and cognition. Deficiencies in Kidney function may be present from birth or develop early in life.

Signs of Kidney Deficiency:

  • Poor cognitive development
  • Bedwetting and frequent urination
  • Weak immune function and frequent illness
  • Congenital or structural health concerns

4. The Lung

The Lungs are particularly vulnerable in children and play a crucial role in respiratory function, skin health, and immune defenses.

Signs of Lung Weakness:

  • Frequent colds, coughs and respiratory infections
  • Asthma and bronchitis
  • Skin conditions and allergies
  • Poor regulation of skin temperature and sweating
